Stripping a Pet Cairn Terrier
"In a few weeks I am getting a cairn terrier puppy, and I am confused about the whole stripping process. I have read a lot about it, but it all seems to be about show dogs. Can you tell me a simpler way to do this, or the way that you do it? Thank you." ~Hannah

Excessive Barking: Cairn Terriers
"We have a six-month old cairn terrier who is very strong willed. He barks excessively especially when we have company. He isn't barking to be mean, he seems to just want everyone's attention. We've tried using a spray bottle, shaking a can with coins in it, and putting him in timeout, but none of these techniques seem to stop him from barking. Do you have any other advice?" ~Michael

Kansas State Dog: Cairn Terrier?
Should Kansas name the Cairn Terrier breed their state dog? I would vote a resounding "YES!", and so does a resident of Wichita who owns Cairns and is trying to get Kansas lawmakers interested in the idea. Read the full Associated Press news release below. I'd also like to hear what you think. Do you think that Kansas should make the Toto dog, the Cairn Terrier their state dog? It's a pretty controversial topic right now in Kansas.

Dog Staph Infection
Poor Molly May, our female Cairn Terrier. The vet told me yesterday that she had a staph infection likely brought on by a seasonal allergy. Happy Jack has it too but not as bad as Molly at this point. I took Molly to the vet as soon as possible when I discovered her belly was covered with little reddish bumps and her privates area was swelled about twice the normal size. She was having trouble eliminating and it really reminded me of how I felt when I had a urinary infection.

How to Get a Puppy to Follow You
"I am trying to train my new puppy to follow me during our daily off leash walks, but she seems distracted by all of the normal outdoor things like leaves, birds, twings, etc. She just ignores me when I call her to follow. Do you have any puppy training sugestions that will help? We live in the country and it is perfectly safe for her to be off leash. I still want to keep a close eye on her and these walks are a fun activity the family can do together with our new pup. ~Bridget

Housebreaking Accidents Happen
Sometimes housebreaking accidents do happen. And sometimes these accidents teach the owner more than it teaches the dog. Happy Jack has been housebroke for well over a year, but today he had an accident that surprised him and me!

Is Your Dog Afraid of Storms?
With the summer season in full force here in Ohio, the weather brings hot and humid days. Generally this means days of reoccurring thunderstorms - some very severe with sharp electrical bolts, high winds and large hail. This also means that one of our Cairn Terriers will experience anxiety.

Crisp and Cheesy Dog Treats Recipe
Molly and Jack took a liking to this homemade dog treat immediately. My Cairn Terriers love cheese so it isn’t any wonder why they literally lick their lips when they see these treats. The great news is that they are easy to make at home and most folks have the ingredients needed in this recipe already.

Dog Training: Importance of Routine
One of the most important aspects of training your dog or Cairn Terrier is to keep a consistent routine. Dogs depend on, thrive and learn the most effectively if you establish a daily routine for them and stick with that plan as much as possible. Many dogs get confused if you suddenly change their routine and some may develop anxieties or become aggressive.

Does your Dog have a Toy Box?
I keep all of my Cairn Terrier's toys in dog toy boxes. They have one toy box inside, one outside, and one in my van. Each toy box has a closable lid, so that I am in control of the number of toys they play with at any given time.
In this way, they do not get bored with all of the toys being available to them at once. By having a toy box in each location, it makes putting toys away quicker and easier.

What to Do When You Don't See Your Puppy Misbehaving
If you do not see your puppy misbehaving, do not scold him. He will not understand why you are suddenly behaving in a not-so-friendly way. Trust me, he will think you have lost your mind or worse, he will become afraid of you or develop distrust.
