Stripping a Pet Cairn Terrier

ask a question - cairn terrier help "In a few weeks I am getting a cairn terrier puppy, and I am confused about the whole stripping process. I have read a lot about it, but it all seems to be about show dogs. Can you tell me a simpler way to do this, or the way that you do it? Thank you." ~Hannah

ask a question - cairn terrier help Hi Hannah. This page explains how I strip my Cairn Terriers. My Cairns are not show dogs either, and that is why I created this website - just for ordinary Cairn Terrier pet owners. I am so excited for you. You are going to love this dog breed. They are so much fun and have a great deal of personality. I had forgotten how much fun a puppy could be, until I was greeted by my neighbor's new puppy the other day. Happy Jack, my youngest Cairn Terrier, is now 1-1/2 years old and Molly May is 2-1/2 years old. They are both pets, and I strip their hard coat just like it says in the article and their skin and coat are healthy. I hope this article helps you.

We are currently being considered as adoptive parents of a new family member (3/4 Cairn Terrier and 1/4 Poodle puppy). Can you tell me if this breed has much dander and/or sheds much? It would be in the house 24/7 with the exceptions of daily walks. Also, is it alright to wipe it down daily, brush it daily and bath it weekly? If so what type of shampoo do you recommend? Thanks!

Hi Kristy. Wiping and brushing your Cairn mix every day would be okay. Since your Cairn has a mix of poodle though, I'd suggest bathing every three weeks (only if needed) to see how the skin reacts to frequent bathing. Cairns are not supposed to be bathed often like you would other dogs. I use a shampoo specially formulated for hard coated dogs. Purebred Cairns have a double coat: hard coat on the outside with a fluffy undercoat so your Cairn mix's coat is hard (rough to the tough) then try the hard coated dog shampoo. I hope this helps.
